Torque Burnout Guide
Grab the wheel, hit the gas and get ready to drive in Torque Burnout, a burnout simulation game. Gain points for being as flashy and showy as possible! Win the crowd over by doing donuts, drifts, burnouts, and more. Torque Burnout is for those that love to hear engines roar, and like the smell of burnt rubber. Torque Burnout almost fits into a different genre. The game is more about executing fine driving skills, while behind the wheel of a car with a monster engine. Driving out of control is not really recommended on confined courses, but now you have an opportunity to see what that feels like. The racing is a bit tougher, but if you can execute the challenges successfully, it can be quite rewarding. The graphics in the game look good. The renderings of the cars are high-quality, and the environments are relatively detailed as well. There is nothing quite like trying to maintain a beast of an engine, while narrowly avoiding obstacles on the courses. The game is broken up into different sections: Test Drive, Freestyle, Challenge, and Championship. A fair amount of your time will be spent playing the Challenge Mode which has 24 challenges for you to complete. There are three different arenas for you to compete in, and each arena as you level up, allows you to add modifiers like oil barrels, bowling pins, etc. You never control where these items are placed, the AI takes care of that for you.Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be an option to play with my Shield controller, or any other controller for that matter. The options you are given are buttons, steering wheel and tilt. I tried all three different options, and to me, the button setup worked best. The second item that is limiting the fun in the game, is that pretty much everything costs coins in this game for you to play. The game is free to play, and there is the typical in-game bank, where you can purchase a stack of credits. As you level up in the game, you can modify your tires, engine, wheels, paint job, etc. You can also purchase different cars as you progress. The problem arises quickly because you either have to play a lot of the Freestyle portion of the game to earn coins, or you are going to have to be very good at completing the courses in challenge mode, and improving your reputation, by driving with style.
Experimenting is the name of the game when it comes to scoring big combos. Try out test drive mode to get a feel for your car and what it can pull off. One of our favorite combos is to burnout for a little while, reach max speed while going straight for a wall, then when you’re about to hit the wall, hit the handbrake and do a 180 degree drift, just barely clearing the wall. You’ll get a score bonus from barely missing the wall, the drift, the handbrake maneuver, and the burnout. Tons of points! Try to find your own favorite combos!Be sure to keep your tires and engine upgraded; they have the biggest impact on your performance! Engines control your torque and weight, while tires control your grip and smoke. Better tires means more smoke, which means better burnout points! Rims control your weight, which is also important for keeping your car under control. Before each match in Freestyle mode, you’re shown the point thresholds for bronze, silver, and gold prizes. Try to hit the top score! Getting gold on a level awards you with the most money, and if you do even better than that you’ll receive special rewards. Burnout: Happens automatically when accelerating in first gear, and can happen continuously by holding down the gas and brakes at the same time. This move is great combo starter but be careful not to hold it too long; burnout wears down your tires really fast!Handbrake: Tapping the handbrake icon next to the regular brakes will send your car into a drift. This is good for initiating turns or drifts.Turns: Self-explanatory! Steer your car using the left and right arrows on the left side of the screen. As to be expected, this is usually how you set up your combo after a burnout. There are multiple variants of tricks using turns, such as donuts.Quick 1st gear: While reversing, double tapping gas will quickly put your car into first gear. Useful for getting back into action fast after getting out of a corner or collision.Stringing together these three basic moves is the key to getting awesome combos.
There are plenty of performance upgrades that you win by earning cash in competitions, or you can buy them by engaging in micro-transactions or shelling out real cash. It isn’t essential to do this to have fun with the game though, if you’re on a budget. But the action is where it is at, and the game rewards you for performing different manoeuvres as you slide your car sideways, keep the wheels spinning and avoid the concrete walls. There are a few different moves to master beyond your basic doughnut, too. The game makes driving easy, with left and right steering arrows on the screen and individual brake and accelerator pedals. Your brake pedal also snaps you into reverse if you hold it for long enough. While driving you have to be aware of how hard you are going and be careful not to pop your tyres, though blowing them to kingdom come is bloody good fun! If you don’t successfully complete a course in the right amount of time, you have to use in-game coins to play a level over. That is extremely frustrating, because you aren’t rewarded for trying the same level again, to get it right. It feels as if you are being setup to fail. That may not be the intent, but less than favorable controls don’t help things any. That is really unfortunate too because, underneath the hood of this game, there are some high-quality parts that have been put in place. Separately they have moments where they shine, but as a whole, they seem to detract from what could be a wonderful game that you could spend a long time playing. Grip the wheel, put your foot to the floor and drive like a maniac, completing donuts and drifts like a champion. Evolve your ride and push it to its limits, rally the crowd into a frenzy and then push it some more to reign supreme.
